How to Get Involved in Sea Scouts

Adult Leaders & Parents

We're grateful if each family can find a way for parents to participate and pitch in to help.  We have roles that need filling and need help with planning & attending activities.

Stay tuned for parent meeting announcements or talk to any of the adult leaders during the Scout meetings to learn of ways to help.

There are Two Levels of Volunteering

1. Adult Scout Leaders - these people are registered with Scouts, have completed Youth Protection Training (YPT), and completed Mandated Reporter training/fingerprinting. For all overnight events or excursions we need "Two Deep Adult Leadership" - meaning we need two Adult Scout Leaders for each outing or event. See below for Steps to Becoming an Adult Scout Leader.

2. Volunteers (those who have not completed all the steps to be an Scout Adult Leader) - help at meetings, drive to events, help with Ship Committee tasks, help at local events/workdays.

Steps to Becoming an Adult Scout Leader

Here are the steps and resources to become an Adult Scout Leader. Questions and support can be obtained by contacting Cody Wright-Kiff our training support volunteer.

Log in to your https://my.scouting.org/ account and visit the training section to complete Youth Protection Training (YPT)

  • This is a 4 part, ~2 hour online training that ends with a short examination that if passed results in certification and will be noted in your scout account.
You will also have to submit an Adult Leader Registration

Use this link to register yourself as an adult with Ship 699: https://my.scouting.org/VES/OnlineReg/1.0.0/?tu=UF-MB-055saa0669

  • Registration cost is $76 and includes $16 insurance.

In California, Adult Scout Leaders need to complete California Mandated Reporter training

Get your CA Boater Card (Recommended)

As Adult Leaders take on more responsibilities there are associated trainings to complete. Sea Scouting Adult Leader Training is great first training to take for an overview of the being a Sea Scout Adult Leader.

Dues and Fees

We have been suggesting Ship dues of $300/year (which works out to $25/month).  If you joined midyear, your dues are prorated to the remaining months (for example, if you join in February, then you pay for 10 months at $25/month = $250). Most families pay all at once, but several do it monthly - we just ask that you keep track of it yourself, as our treasurer is a volunteer and shouldn't have to chase you down for payments!

Annual BSA Youth Registration Fees are about $100 per year (new members incurr and additional $25 new member fee)

Make payment by Venmo to @SantaCruz-SeaScouts, or bring cash or check made out to SCYMF to meeting.

No Scout or Adult Leader will be turned away due to lack of funds. Contact santacruzseascouts@gmail.com discuss fee waivers.

Activity Fees

We have occasional activity fees, which we’ll collect for at the time (like if we ask a kayak outfit to take us out, or if we attend a camp) - attendance in those is optional of course.
